Drug Abuse and the Rich and Famous

The rich and famous are no more immune to the devastating effects of drug addiction than are regular people living ordinary lives. Regularly you will see splashed across the front pages of magazines and newspapers, as well as the Internet and on television, that yet another movie star or musician has checked themselves into a drug rehab program. The redheaded “It” girl Lindsay Lohan checked herself into rehab to fight an addiction to cocaine and alcohol in recent months. Robert Downey Jr. is no stranger to drug rehab. He first visited rehab in 1987 and has been there a number of times throughout his lifetime in order to be treated for addiction to crack cocaine and heroin. The list is long and distinguished as many members of the rich and famous have succumbed to the allure of drugs, as well as the easy access to them in Tinseltown. In particular, young actors and actresses are admitting that they have drug addiction problems at younger and younger ages.

Why Does This Regularly Occur?

Fame and the pressure to always be on top is one reason that many shining stars become drug abusers. Still others do it to cope with the stress that comes with celebrity status. Many young actors who become famous at a young age simply cannot cope with their newfound celebrity status and the influx of big bucks that begin to come their way at an alarmingly fast rate.

The abuse of drugs and alcohol can take over a person’s life if they do not seek the help that they so desperately need. Some people, such as Keith Urban and Rush Limbaugh recognize that addiction has taken over their life and check themselves into rehab in order to become clean and sober. Others need a nudge from people in their life who clearly see that they have a problem.

Rehab has a purpose beyond the obvious physical one of ridding drugs or alcohol from the system. It gives an addict the opportunity to search inside themselves to determine the factors that may have lead them to drink excessively or abuse drugs in the first place. From there the person can work closely with a counselor to find their way back to the drug free life that they seek to have.
